Spark Magazine/ ROJO SCARVES

As many of you know, my sister Batli is a photographer and mostly takes fashion photos! She is currently on the Spark Magazine staff which is a fashion magazine at the University of Texas at Austin. For the Februrary photo-shoot, the magazine had a staff photo shoot in which my sister was featured (above). The day of the photo shoot I arrived to Austin and gave my sister one of my signature RoJo scarves! My scarf is pictured in the top left picture! They are $28! Thanks to Batli and the friends at the Spark Magazine for including my scarf in the February issue!

Also be sure to check out the David Bowie inspired editorial. Batli took all the photos and she is so amazing! I freaked out when I saw the Jeffrey Campbell heels. The pictures are colorful and creative, not to mention the hair and makeup is perfect! Plus most of the clothes were from vintage stores AKA MY FAVORITE!! Even though she's my sister, I am so happy that she is so good at photography because it comes in handy when I need photos of my clothes!

Some Like it HAUTE.

Ms. Foreman, my old fashion design teacher, always taught me to put my zippers in by hand. She always said "remember to put your zipper in the French Haute Couturian way!" In my five years of fashion design, I have still never put a zipper in by machine. This appreciation for hand work makes the Haute Couture shows for me even more interesting and I await them each season! The great thing about the Couture shows is that there are not very many designers that still have Haute Couture houses, which makes it easier to follow a la style.com.

I must admit, Elie Saab had the best collection and I wanted every piece from the runway. The intricate rouging to floor-length knee showing gowns were impeccable. Boys Boys Boys. Menswear Fall 2011

From first hand experience, I know that styling boys is not easy. However, thanks to many talented designers, men in the world are able to dress just as stylish as women. In America, I have yet to find many men who dress impeccably, not to say that there are not any! But in Mexico City I see the most dapper dudes! It's probably because they pay attention to these menswear shows (hint, hint)...

Check out these favorites from the Menswear Fall 2011. I have to admit, I love the preppy style for men, but I also like a messy elegance. Lots of designers used hats in their collections and dark colors. There were a few random pants or shirts with color (see Acne). Overall the majority of collections were to my standards, and I hope more men see the shows! All pictures from Style.com (excluding last three)!

I also tried to style a local band named Dipper (check out their music) and had an interesting time trying to make these boys listen to my visions. Not only did I show them pictures of past menswear collections (Spring 2011) but I also showed them some of the pictures below. I was not very successful in convincing these boys to buy some things, but we did have some success finding some jeans!

Le Girl Talk

Girl Talk was nothing but bright lights, toilet paper bandanas worn by Greg Gillis, and an ecstasy within the crowd that could not be contained. As Greg dropped some new beats, I sought out to document an evident link between the bizarrely-clad guests and the music. The variety of songs that Greg uses to make his mash-ups attract a wide-set audience, which meant all the more excitement in clothes.

The sold-out show allowed me to explore a wide-range of young and old hipsters, wanna-be hipsters, as well as some strange creatures under the influence of drugs. Each member in the audience added their own spunk in addition to the vivacious music that Greg played.

I heard muffled music as I entered the venue, all I wanted to do was listen to Girl Talk. The style of the opening band, Penguin Prison, did not concord with what the audience would be hearing only a half hour later. I expected another DJ to open for Greg, but instead this electro-band who combines dubstep with the use of actual instruments opened. In reality I was not paying much attention to them, but it may have also been because a multitude of 6-footed men who stood in front of me in Gorilla masks and suits obstructed my vision.

As I surfed the audience, I found some dapper men in suits, and some tacky drug-driven girls and boys. I did not feel displaced wearing velvet leggings, a long-sleeved loose shirt, an oversized ring, and floral flats. However my attire did contrast the many girls who wore elastic headbands across their foreheads to accent their legwarmers, glow in the dark splatter painted t-shirts, and sequin shorts. The girls that jumped on stage to be aside Greg Gillis were wearing tight skirts or leggings with loose crop tops. While some imitated the style of a stripper, others were able to wear these items in a modest way. An modelesque Girl Talk fan wore lace leggings, a tight black skirt, boots, knee-high socks, a black off the shoulder shirt and a bulky scarlet-patterned eternity scarf-an outfit that could come straight out of Lookbook.nu. Her friend wore simple black skinny pants with a white graphic tee and oxfords. Her olive green jacket added a hint of color that suited her complexion.

Dancing is imperative at Girl Talk and the majority of these outfits were for the comfort of dancing. Greg eventually took his shirt off while he mixed, but the bandanna made out of the toilet paper that was unrolled into the party-goers stayed on. Many men wore jeans with t-shirts, which I expected. The men who wore otherwise stood out to me. One man wore Rock and Republic jeans with a half-tucked oxford and tie combo and a striped sweater vest. His thick frames accented the look. He was not a pretentious man nor an ashamed one. In fact he admitted to always wearing such an outfit on almost a daily basis.

The crowd was not only in a state of ecstasy listening to Girl Talk, but they were also on ecstasy. Watching as people stepped on my toes and trying to get from one end of the venue to the other, I saw how people reacted to the music. Whether it was flinging off a scarf and waving it or changing shirts because of the sweat that covered the previous shirt, the drugged audience members seemed to flaunt their bright clothes the most.

The challenge to find fashionable outfits and the fright of seeing wacko outfits allowed me to see how each individual dressed uniquely, but all together in a large room, I saw how two strangers could appear as friends at Girl Talk.

Ps. Girl Talk played the new album "All Day", but it was different than how it sounds online. At every show Greg mixes his songs differently in order to give the crowd a new experience. He also uses a state of the art mixing machine which create his super-cool mashups (thanks NPR). Check out Girl Talk if you want to dance the night away or just listen to a collection of good music in continuum!

Musica. Moda. COACHELLA

Three crazy rocking days and nights in Indio, California. Looking forward to some favorites including the Strokes who have a new album, Angles, coming out March 22nd, Cold War Kids, Angus and Julia Stone, Duck Sauce, Arcade Fire, Black Keys, Animal Collectice, Mumford and Sons and the list goes on and on! Can't wait to check out some new tunes as well. Definitely a packed up line up (ehem Kanye West). The best part about this music festival is the hipsteresque fashions mixed with chic elegance all under the blazing Cali sun.

Le Golden Globes

How about that awkward Natalie Portman laugh during the Golden Globes? Or that awkward joke about the characters from "The Tourist" not being three-dimensional? Nonetheless, the dresses from the 2011 Golden Globes were spectacular and did not disappoint. While I question the taste of many artists such as Helena Bonham Carter (although she is quite the brave one to be so bold, which I respect), many of the dresses were gorgeous. I seemed to like many of the long-sleeved dresses, probably because I have an obsession with long-sleeved dresses and have not been able to find one for myself.
