Out with the 2011, and in with the 2012

photo from intothefashion.com
As I get ready to celebrate the New Year, I noticed that the censor was still on my jacket that I had planned on wearing tonight...there goes my outfit that I have been saving to wear. On to planning a new outfit, gotta make it a good one for the last saturday of 2011. But anyhow...My sister just finished a photo shoot which I hope ended up nicely, the photos will be up soon!

I wanted to wish you all a very happy new year! Health and happiness to all! Keep reading Moda Rojo because 2012 is going to be a very big year for the blog---actually. Just wait, just wait.

While my sister abandons me and goes to NYC for the rest of winter break, I will be blogging like a mad woman. 2012 should be a good one.

Feliz ano nuevo a todos!!!!!!

Leafing

Leafing
2011
Ronit Joselevitz (b. 1993)

Leaves on paper. Tempra on canvas.

Inspired by Tomas Tranströmer’s poem, “The Clearing”, the dress focuses on the idea of forgotten stories, histories, and memories. The dress is made using completely dried leaves and tempra paint representing green shrubberies. The bottom of the dress starts at a dark shade of green and slowly begins to fade into nothing and eventually reaches the brown leaves, suggesting the idea of “Writ[ing] down and forget[ing],” as Tranströmer says in his poem—the green representing oral traditions and stories that once seemed alive and always exchanged, and the brown illustrating the written and forgotten histories and stories that have been stored. While a green leaf on a tree is alive and colorful, once it falls off a tree, its color begins to fade and it begins to decompose and disintegrate into the earth, where it is forever forgotten. People step on dead leaves as they pass through streets, neglecting that they were once beautiful. Leaves were used to show this because of Tranströmer’s repeated use of tree imagery in his poems.

Original design by Ronit Joselevitz. Made without a sewing machine too..

FINALS. FINALS. FINALS

These are crazy times in the Moda Rojo headquarters as I am prepping to take my final exams to end this semester of craziness. As the year comes to an end and I take a look back at this semester, I realize that I was not able to blog daily or even weekly on a frequent basis due to my busy schedule and classes. Next semester I will finally be in a design class and art history, so I will be in classes that will actually be of use to me! No more chemistry guys! Although I do have to take it in summer school as a result, but we won't think that far into the future.

Over winter break, expect a revamping of Moda a la Rojo, but seriously this time! Although I will be working and visiting with friends, this blog will not go unnoticed over the break, but will rather undergo drastic changes. Also next semester I will be interning with College Fashionista and have been chosen as a Fashion Guru for next semester, so there will be many links to that site next semester. Be sure to check them out.

I also made a dress out of leaves for an English final, so photos of that will be up soon! I felt like I pulled a project runway, rushing to make the dress with sparse materials that I bought at the art store. Not to mention I did not have my mannequin or my sewing machine. Make do and mend as I like to say.

As I study, I've been listening to non-stop music on Spotify. Here are a few artists from my playlists that you should check out....

-Frou Frou
-Julieta Venegas
-The Shins
-M83
-Mew
-Tokyo Police Club
-Oberhofer
-Yann Tierson
-Bon Iver
-Lykke Li
-Ellie Goulding

Until next time, as in next week once I am finished with my three finals!!!!!!!!

Problems

No big deal, I just spent an hour writing a blog post and it deleted my post. GREAT.
Below is the recollection of my thoughts that I tried to remember again...

So I noticed that it is already mid-November and there have been no new posts on Moda RoJo. MAJOR PROBLEM. But do not fret, because alas! A new blog post by me!   Instead of writing it verbatim on here, I have decided to share the link with you (ps that's probably illegal even though I wrote it myself, so make sure all you bloggers out there city correctly and give credit to everyone who deserves it). And while you are reading my post, take the time to look at the Spark Full Issues. Spark is UT's own fashion magazine. It kind of extremely rocks. I just wrote about the mysterious lives of models that no one knows about. Just kidding! It's more along of the lines of "the undercover model, who doesn't just model, but also DJs or sings."

And to keep Moda Rojo enticing I have decided to share with you one of the songs that I am currently obsessed with and cannot stop listening to: It's called Midnight City by M83. These guys were just at Fun Fun Fun Fest, which I sadly did not attend, but they are definitely a band to watch. Their old stuff is pretty wicked too, so listen to their fresh style. (Video from YouTube)

Oh and uhhhh. How could I forget to mention?! The new Florence + the Machine CD, Ceremonials is crazily amazing, so listen to the WHOLE thing. Do it, do it, do it! And on top of that, Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto is AWESOME TOO. Especially Princess of China. Love it.

*If you haven't noticed, my writing style has slightly changed for this post. I decided to do just an rather colloquial post today because...well just because.

Now on to some fashion news: Versace for H&M anyone? It's redicioulosly awesome. Too bad I don't live in a city that has an H&M. Thanks Austin. The videos of the runway show look super cool, and I really wish I could have gone...One day, one day.

The Whitney Port Protege in partnership with BlackBerry Challenges are coming along just great. Right now I am finishing up my second challenge and partaking in them has been super fun. Not to mention that I am OBSESSED with the BlackBerry Bold that they sent me! Plus it allows me to expose myself to even more elements of fashion, which we all know I love--le duh!

Braided

I sometimes like to weave in my personal style throughout the blog! Although I always write more than show pictures, I thought I'd mix it up a bit in order to keep Moda a la Rojo dynamic. This was taken about two weeks ago with my fashion bestie Ricardo. Right now I am rewriting a paper, studying for textiles, and writing a blog post for Spark Magazine. Plus I need to do some calculus. Ideally I would like to go out tonight, but there is a deluge of work that I must complete so that I can have a life on the weekend. Look out for new posts in the future. For now I will just enjoy the beautiful weather in Austin and continue studying! (I sound like the biggest loser...)

Welcome to the Hectic Life of a College Student

Every day I write in my agenda the following, "Blog." But all my other homework piles on top of that simple task and therefore I am not able to blog everyday, or as much as I would like. It is beyond unfortunate, but I will find time to blog! Now that I am a writer for Spark Magazine, most of my writing will be seen there, as I will be focusing my attention to this student run magazine. However do not fret because I will never forget my true roots so I will continue to blog as much as I can.

I never was able to do my stories on NYFW, London FW, Milan FW, or Paris FW. Yeah I know, I'm way behind...but as promised, my favorite looks will appear at some point on my blog.

But in the mean time, keep biting your nails and stay tuned for things that will come in the future:
-A new banner
-1000000 new entries (just kidding, not that many!)
-New photoshoots
-More people watching during concerts (I am going to a food trailer festival this weekend, where Delta Spirit will be playing).
-&& NEW DESIGNS FROM MODAROJO

Don't get impatient with the blog, as it will be moving slowly, but the second I have time to write reviews and articles, I will do so.

On a side note I have been chosen to be one of Whitney Port's Protege's in the BBM Challege so I will be competeting with others so that I can meet Whitney and expand my knowledge on the fashion industry by learning from her! I will have 4 challenges before the final grand prize winner is announced, so stay tuned as the public gets to vote after ever challenge!!! (SO EXCITED!! My new BlackBerry will be sent to me soon!)

There are some exciting changes coming to Moda a La Rojo, and they will become more apparent slowly but surely!

Knot yet Knitwear Time.

...Well, who really cares? Not me. In the morning on my long treks to class (I might be overstating that a bit), the weather is ideal for knits, but as the day progresses, the temperature increasingly approaches the three digit spectrum. I don't exactly let that get in my way though. A few days ago I was really stressed and studying for an exam, when my friend Ricardo and I had to to meet so he could return my calculator. Instead of just exchanging a few words and going back to my dorm, I decided to take a one hour break with him where we shot looks together, and it was a needed break! I must admit that my face was very red by the end of the impromptu shoot, due to the sun! Ricardo took all the photos, and he let me borrow his ASOS satchel for a few of the pictures!

Hanging in There

Hello friends,

My deepest apologies for not continuing my posts on NYFW, London FW, Milan FW, and Paris FW. My thoughts and comments will eventually make it onto here, but I have spent my time studying--my abhorred past time. In the mean time, feel free to rummage through my old posts and my latest look on Lookbook! I promise that I will have a burst of new posts in the coming month. The end of September has come and with October right around the corner, that means cooler weather *fingers crossed* which means I get to bring out the layers, boots, scarfs, tights, sweaters, and coats. There's a lot in store at Moda Rojo and there will be a boom of posts in the coming month, like I said! Hopefully I won't have to be studying each and every hour like I have been for the past few weeks!!

YSL Fall/Winter 2011/2012

I went to see the Helmut Newton exhibit at the MFAH a few months ago and I immediately saw the influence that he still has on Yves Saint Laurent today, in particular the most used layout they use for their ads in magazines (a model behind a window of a skyscraper) and now videos. Here's their latest ad campaign video, where Raquel Zimmerman changes into myriad pieces from the latest YSL Fall/Winter collection, with the same Helmut Newton inspired background. I just returned from Austin City Limits yesterday, (plus I always write about different bands), so it is obvious that I am a music lover too. YSL did a great job of pairing LCD Soundsystem's "I can change" with accelerated footage of Raquel in several outfits.

Best of NYFW Day 1

Check out these awesome pieces from day 1 of New York Fashion Week. I really wish I was there so I could write more about the movement of the clothes and what not, but at least there are pictures and live streaming right?!

Enjoy!

The Collar. NYFW Day 1

Instead of studying for a chemistry test, I have been looking at pictures from the Spring 2012 ready-to-wear runway, trying to group designer's aesthetics and themes together. I want to analyze this seasons runway collections in a different manner to shake things up a bit on the blog! For Day 1, I will have two posts, one where I focus on a common detail throughout multiple designer's collections and the second showcasing pictures of pieces that I found interestingly crafted and beautifully made. I will highlight one or more details from the collections each day, and then follow up with a more inveterate post, like I have commonly done for past collections. And of course, if there is just that one collection where I like over 10 pieces, then they will get their own post, attributed to everything that went into make the collection.

So far for the Spring 2012 RTW collections, I have noticed the use of the collar. It might just be that I am currently obsessed with sheer and collared shirts because of the classiness they exude (or the fact that they go with pants, skirts, or even over a maxi dress). The following pictures are from Jason Wu (whose collection was out of control because of its distinctive mix of colors, collared shirts, a-line skirts, and beautiful fabrics...not to mention it's unique runway decor which included layered pieces of white rectangular shapes that appeared like thick pieces of paper).  Other designers included are Doo.Ri, whose excellency in draping is portrayed in the following photos, and Ruffian (which was actually part of day 2 and who had some pieces that I personally didn't like because of the fabric choice; the fabric used had too much luster and you could see the seams in the photographs and they did not drape gracefully not the models' body).

I am always reminded of 1930s and 1940s when I see a dress with a collar, but for some reason, the collars of this season just didn't read that to me. The designers might have gained from inspiration from that era (because fashion repeats itself), however when I see the pictures below, I think more about the era we are in now and the 90s. It's crazy how each season designers are able to create a new rendering of past trends. Gotta love that collar.
