Marc Jacobs

As many of you know, I went to one of Marc Jacobs' studios in New York City where I saw some of his sample pieces for his runway shows being made, and talked to one of the people who work closely with Jacobs during the shows fixing the pieces the day of the show etc.(See The.City post for more details).

I was inspired to write a little mock entry for an English assignment about Marc Jacobs for this really cool website, Stuff Jewish Young Adults Like and I recently submitted my entry and actually got it on the page! Check it out, along with the other very funny entries! PS the shout out is great!!

Necessary

These pictures that are about to be posted and just some random pictures of different styles and designs that I am obsessed with.  Whether it is the color, the draping, or the design, the following pictures are a compilation of some great things that I have saved. Most of them are fall/wintery, but there are some spring related items in there. I love the browns, the patterns that use black, and the combination of off white with black as well. Enjoy!

Fashion Houston, Day 3

Guess who should have posted this ages ago? Anyways here was the lineup:
  1. Chloe Dao
  2. Toni Whitaker
  3. Irina Shabayeva
  4. Marc Bouwer
  5. Kiton

1. Chloe Dao
She's a personal favorite of mine--I wore one of her dresses to the show. Her new designs were so beautiful, the scene was set by a video that showed some of her designs and the first model that went down the runway had balloons, like the balloons that were in the video. Her selection of music was a poppy French song that went along with the bright blues and pinks that were used throughout her spring 2011 collection.

3. Irina Shabayeva
LOVE HER. Her collection was absolutely astonishing, there were so many pieces. Her theme was flowers, and that was portrayed through the different dresses that looked like flowers. Her craft with the draping of the fabrics was beautiful. The opening piece was a chic dress that I wanted to take home! Click here to watch Irina's show. She posted this video on her facebook page!

4. Marc Bouwer
Picture from ABC channel 13, Marc Bouwer
He had an array of clothing. He presented to different collections in one show, so you can imagine the number of pieces he had. One of his models kicked off her shoes in order to evade a horrible fall! Click here for pictures from the show from ABC channel 13.

p.s I will be making a dress this weekend in response to a painting, so be on the look out for pictures! Maybe I will squeeze in a few other designs too.

Fashion Houston 2010. Day 2 October 12

Designers:
CrOp by David Peck // Elaine Turner Handbags
Lauren Pierce
Lela Rose
Net-A-Porter

I had met David Peck when I went to National Portfolio Day-he was representing Parsons of Paris. His collection was inspired by coffee beans and photographs. His pieces were very wearable and young, and the patterns were very cool, for lack of a better term. He was really nice when I met him. Most of his pieces had some sort of a pattern, but not all did. They are very structured pieces, that look very flattering on the models. He used mostly greens, blues, pinks, and grays.Pictures will be posted shortly. The pieces were complimented with Elaine Turner handbags, which completed the looks. To paraphrase what is said on Project Runway-Accessories can make a look. These handbags did not take away from the clothes, but added more flavor to them. I think the focus of this collection was more on the patterns, which is why each piece was quite simple, but not in a bad way!

Lauren Pierce debuted her collection that was tied together by the printed silks used. They were all dyed by women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She also matched her outfits with FEED bags. I particuarly enjoyed this collection because I am very involved in community service and I really liked the message of her collection. Although her line is called Lauren Pierce, designer Lauren Bush Pierce had support from President George H.W Bush and first lady Barbara Bush. I was waiting to go sit down, when I was stopped and told to wait. I was puzzled at first, but when I realized that 3 security agents were standing by me, I remembered that one of the designers was Lauren Bush Pierce- the president's granddaughter.

Lela Rose's collection was also another high of the night. From her dresses to gowns, designer Lela Rose created a collection that shows fun sophistication. From her textured dresses, to her simple yet perfectly fitted cocktail dresses, all the pieces in this spring 2011 collection were cohesive.

Net-A-Porter's first runway show was stunning. From Vionnet dresses to Dolce and Gabbana jackets, every piece that went down the runway was fashion forward. There were 25 looks that were modeled, each having something unique about the collection.

Pictures from all shows will be posted shortly.

Fashion Houston 2010. Day 1 October 11th

Designers:
Cesar Galindo
Lyn Devon
Christian Siriano

All three designers' collections amazed me! Every single piece that walked down the runway was beautiful. Houston native Cesar Galindo's collection was so unique, and on top of it all, he is super popular in the Latin American world. There were reporters from Reforma and Epous. He also introduced "Ro", who was his roommate for the show "Fashion Show" that will debut on Bravo November 9th. I got to personally meet Ro. Pictures will be posted soon. Favorites to be posted soon.Watch Cesar's collection.

I wanted every piece from Devon's collection for myself. Her pieces we so cohesive and I loved her colors (ivory, silvers, grays, greens, reds, and black). The pieces were characterized by collared shirts and bows. The patterns on the fabric we also were beautiful and I loved how they looked together. She took a different approach on "business" attire, and it was translated into preppy, yet professionally chic pieces. Pictures from the actual runway will be posted soon, but for now here are some pictures from her spring 2011 lookbook!

The last show of the Night was Christian Siriano. I am an avid Project Runway viewer, so to put it simply, I was overwhelmed at the fact that I was actually going to see his collection at a live show. When his show began I was so ecstatic to see the pieces up close. They were all beautiful, especially the finale piece-a tan sweetheart bodice with a giant tulle. Also he used my all time favorite shade of brown in a few pieces, and lined those pieces with red-sheer genius. His mixture of leather and silk and patterns created a wonderful collection. His use of ruffles was not overly used and it created cohesive wearable looks, that I wish I could have!

I had seen his full collection on Style.com, but I got to see an abbreviated version of that in real life. It was really a great opportunity, not only to see Christian Siriano's Spring 2011 line, but Lyn Devon's and Cesar Galindo's. To top the night of excitement off, I was sitting next to Christian's manager, and actually was able to meet Christian the next day at Neiman Marcus. Just being at the show, and then actually meeting Christian is one of my highlights in life. I really admire Christian's aesthetic and as a student designer, it is so encouraging to see such a young designer become so well known. More pictures of my favorites to be posted soon!

Arte en Los Espacios Blancos

Today in my English class, we went to an art gallery called Gremillion & Co. There we got to meet with Nicola Parente and look around at his most recent series, named "Edge of Awakening". Talking to a fellow artist was very inspiring, especially hearing his story on how he actually came to be an artist. I also learned how galleries select artists and paintings to be featured in their gallery's.
(Picture from blurb.com)

We also went to the Museum for Contemporary Craft and saw some amazing pieces! It is an exhibition that showcases about 50 artists around Texas and there are about 73 pieces shown! The actual museum also has some artists in residence there. It's a very different museum, but very beautiful!

I have become increasingly interested in not only fashion, but the art world in general. I definitely want to be an art collector at some point in my life so that I can support my fellow artists, and be able to enjoy art at my house! For now, what I can, and will do is attend gallery openings and galleries in general!

To start off I'd like to say, that the change of location from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center, did profoundly change the setting for New York Fashion Week this year. The runways were all different for every show, which did slightly alter some pictures. Nonetheless, designers created a myriad of collections, most of which I viewed on Style.com. (Which by the way is where these pictures from this post are from). Once New York Fashion Week was over, I continued viewing London Fashion Week, where more collections were shown.

Most of the collections used light blues, off whites, and a tannish/gold color-colors which happened to be the inspiration of my upcoming collection. Of course there were other prominent colors, but I was on the look out for those certain colors and they were the ones that caught my eye the most.

More to come after National Portfolio Day (when I have time to blog again). I am still anxiously waiting for Luella's collection!

The City.

What else could one be referring to when one says "the city"? Of course, no other city, but New York City. This summer I had the opportunity to spend two weeks alone with my sister, Batli. For candid shots of the city during the trip, check out her blog: http://photographieunique.blogspot.com/

(She takes most of my pictures for my fashion shows).

I took classes at LIM college or the Labratory Institute of Merchandising. I signed up for Fashion Show Production, Fashion Magazines, and Fashion Behind the Scences. It was really a great experience and I met people from all over the country, and from other countries such as Spain, Brazil, and Belgium. For my fashion show production class I was on the style team. We had to create a fashion show in 4 days- we had to create a theme, invites, promote the show, find models, and clothes. Our theme was "Behind the Plastic", and we had "Barbie" looks and "normal" looks that corresponded to the "Barbie" looks. It was really a successful show, and our teacher Mister Lee said it was the best one he had seen!

Speaking of him, he was probably one of the best teachers I have ever had. He really made me realize how you really have to know a lot of history to be involved in fashion. If you don't know who influenced who, then you aren't giving credit for the people that invented or started certain things. We even had a quiz on some basic fashion history terms and important people, and it was probably the best quiz I have ever taken.

In my fashion magazines class I had to create my own 30 page magazine. It was really quite tedious and I had to stay after class until the IT man at LIM kicked me out and told me the school was closing. We had to have a photo shoot for the center of the book editorial, write an editorial about ourselves, make an ad using a photo from the photo shoot, and a cover picture using another picture from the photo shoot. We had to make a table of contents as well and headlines and dummy copy to go along with each headline within the magazine. I had to create a calender for three months of my choice and create different headlines and have a different person for the cover. I only had to chose one of those to actually make. I learned a lot about what it takes to make a magazine, and it is not easy!

Finally, my fashion behind the scenes class was a class where I didn't have to do as much work, however I did have to make a final presentation. We went to M & S Schmalberg, which is a family owned company that makes fabric flowers. They are one of the few surviving businesses in the garment district. It was really sad hearing Warren Brand, the current owner of the company, speak about how it is a struggling business. A hundred years ago, the garment industry thrived off of locally owned businesses that made clothes. Nowadays, things are sent to Asia to be made because it is cheaper. Despite the fact that Warren said they were struggling, the fabric flowers were beautiful creations that were very decorative. It was my favorite field trip because I learned the perspective of local designers in the fashion industry. M & S Schmalberg makes the flowers for many famous designers' clothes including Chanel and Jcrew. They also make flowers for celebrities as accessories, such as Anne Hathaway and Sarah Jessica Parker for Sex and the City 2. You might think that they only make things for big time companies and people, but everyday people can go in and ask for orders. No order is too big or small for them. The great thing about these flowers is that I saw how they were made by hand and it was really a phenomenon to see!

I also went to the Tommy Hilfiger corporation and I got to see their archives. The interesting thing about their archives is that 90% of the clothes in it aren't actually Tommy Hilfiger. It is a room that was made for inspiration for the designers- to cut off swatches and see different styles of clothing.

Aside from going to school everyday, I also went to see the exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: "American Woman Fashioning a National Identity", which was by far the best exhibit I have ever seen. It started off with designs from the great Charles Fredrick Worth and continued through the eras, showing different Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin designs. Of course there was an original Gabrielle Chanel. I also went to the FIT Museum and they had an exhibit on eco-fashion. As an environmentalist and a designer who uses recycled materials, I really was enthralled by the different methods of ec0-friendly design. Aside from the museums, I also managed to go see the "Catwalk Sidewalk" which is temporary exhibit on the streets of New York where over 100 designers designed a mannequin with any material that could withstand the elements. They were later going to be auctioned to benefit the "Save the Garment District" campaign.

Batli and I loved walking around Greenwich Village and Soho. New York City is definitely the best place to people watch and I had a great time seeing some eccentric fashion combinations. Did I mention that I took a tour of MOOD? Unfortunately Swatch wasn't there! But my tour guide was a student at FIT, and he was quite a character!

And of course I saved the best for last! I got to go where the Marc Jacobs sample dresses are made for the runway shows. I spoke to the people who actually make the dresses and they explained to me all the technical work. Looking at the dresses in their process of being made was quite amazing and I noticed all the hand work that goes into making the dresses. I also went where Rag and Bone dresses were being made for mass production. I thought all clothes were assembled in Indonesia or China, but actually there are quite a few companies that still employ Americans to assemble their clothes!
