The Rest of NYFW

From Jeremy Scott's "Baby Spice" inspired collection to Marc Jacobs' use of polka dots, lace, and vinyl, the rest of NYFW was interesting to say the least. Proenza Schouler's show which I saw on live stream was amazing and I want to emulate their runway for the next Tickle Me Pink show (think a warehouse venue and interesting zig-zagged light fixtures that matched the zig-zag patterned fabrics).

The juxtaposition of different patterns (see Proenza Schouler and Marc by Marc Jacobs) has been a prominent theme throughout many Fall RTW collections. It's a tricky thing to do and I think the boys at Proenza really mastered it! Also there was a lot of velvet in their collection (a personal favorite).

Pictures from Style.com as usual, and enjoy. London Fashion Week posts to follow.

Elie Saab In Detail

With four weeks left until Paris Fall Fashion Week, Beirut-based designer Elie Saab decided to show the world his elaborate couture draping. Attendees and models lined up at the Theatre National de Chaillot in Paris a theatre that typically debuts various contemporary dance performances to view Saab’s Spring 2011 Haute Couture collection. The audience saw forty-one gowns, cocktail dresses, and a stunning nude floral wedding gown finale worn by model Gertrud Hegelund.

Saab’s palette consisted of light nudes, gold, pastel lilac, a deep crimson red, and a popping black. His creations were illuminated by the exaggerated draping and fabric flowers that overtook the collection. Models darted down the catwalk like rays of subdued light, donning silk organzas the color of rose garderns-- crimson, lilac, and nude. Saab’s dresses emulated the signature Marchesa draping, yet Saab was able to add his own flare to each design with intricate floral details. His use of the chiffon to create sharp silhouettes created a complete red carpet worthy collection of gowns and cocktail dresses. From low to high necklines and one-shouldered gowns to sweet-heart cuts, the soft colors and flowers worked in unison to compliment one another. The floral effect that dominated the collection created a blurred effect and feather-like movement to each piece on the runway.

Each piece on its own stood as Oscar-worthy A-listers. Tim Blanks of Style.com says that the pieces “evoked…the up-to-the-neck missy-ness of Norma Shearer, an Oscar winner from centuries ago.” The variation of styles in Saab’s used Haute Couture collection makes it probable that these elegantly fashioned gowns with open fronts will see the red carpet at the Academy Awards. The shiny black sequin dress seems worthy for co-host Anne Hathaway.

Like each Haute Couture designer, Elie Saab created each piece in a fashion house in Paris under confounding rules that preserve the art of Haute Couture. The emphasis on the organza floral detail created an ethereal  impressionist feel to the Spring 2011 Couture collection. This collection reminded me of painters such as Monet who painted things they way they saw them, blurred, and without really blending colors. The floral effect of Saab’s pieces created a blurred effect.

NYFW. Day 2

Watch live streaming from the Rebecca Minkoff show! Sean Lennon + GOASTT performed live and I have to say I liked the feel of the music as it went along with the look. It was a great addition to the loose off the shoulder sweater feel that the collection had. I love how the live music went hand in hand with the clothes and like I said in my Girl Talk post, fashion really does go along with certain types of music!

More pictures from Jason Wu and other shows tbp tonight! PROENZA SCHOULER LIVE STREAMING 8pm FEB. 16. Get ready for a huge review about that show and others including Marc Jacobs and other favorites.

In the mean time here is a picture of my latest hand-painted creation.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK. DAY 1

As I slowly got up from bed this morning to get ready for school, I was driven by the idea that in only a matter of hours I would be blogging about NYFW, a week that I have been counting down-in addition to writing "New York Fashion Week" in my agenda and my frequent glances at it everyday! Even though I have been sleep deprived this week, there is no way that I am not going to abandon my early sleeping hours for the next few days. I am not in New York attending the shows, but style.com is my best friend and helps me get by (all photos from style.com)! My goal in life is to attend NYFW and work shows...only time will tell!

We are only two months into the new decade and already I see nineties, seventies, and even fifties influences in the majority of today's shows. The first fall fashion week of the decade was kicked off by wonderful designers including Christian Siriano, Lynn Devon, Nicholas K, and Vena Cava among the few (and I've actually had the opportunity to see CS and LD Spring 2011 collections at Houston Fashion Week). It's amazing how history repeats itself,  and how fashion designers take influences from past decades' history and incorporate a new 2011 touch to the collections. Notable influences from shows included:

  1. Luca Luca: total 50's housewife feel (hair and bias cut skirts gave it away).
  2. Christian Siriano: Mod (long maxi skirt with chiffon, but then also a balance with super feminine Oscar-worthy gowns, including florals that reminded me of Elie Saab's 2011 Spring CTR show).
  3. Max Azria: Minimal with also long chiffon maxi skirts and white turtle neck layering.
  4. Vena Cava: Nineties Spice Girls (revealing tops) meets Ke$ha (makeup).
  5. Nicholas K: I spy a rich green velvet legging...They are not only gorgeous, but the perfect shade of green. Bravo to Christopher and Nicholas Kunz!

The Fall 2011 season collections started strong with common themes such as maxi skirts, layering with a cable net loose crew neck sweater, color blocking, pants, and lowered waist lines. Reoccurring colors included black, green, and gray (not shocking...)

Spark Magazine/ ROJO SCARVES

As many of you know, my sister Batli is a photographer and mostly takes fashion photos! She is currently on the Spark Magazine staff which is a fashion magazine at the University of Texas at Austin. For the Februrary photo-shoot, the magazine had a staff photo shoot in which my sister was featured (above). The day of the photo shoot I arrived to Austin and gave my sister one of my signature RoJo scarves! My scarf is pictured in the top left picture! They are $28! Thanks to Batli and the friends at the Spark Magazine for including my scarf in the February issue!

Also be sure to check out the David Bowie inspired editorial. Batli took all the photos and she is so amazing! I freaked out when  I saw the Jeffrey Campbell heels. The pictures are colorful and creative, not to mention the hair and makeup is perfect! Plus most of the clothes were from vintage stores AKA MY FAVORITE!! Even though she's my sister, I am so happy that she is so good at photography because it comes in handy when I need photos of my clothes!

Some Like it HAUTE.

Ms. Foreman, my old fashion design teacher, always taught me to put my zippers in by hand. She always said "remember to put your zipper in the French Haute Couturian way!" In my five years of fashion design, I have still never put a zipper in by machine. This appreciation for hand work makes the Haute Couture shows for me even more interesting and I await them each season! The great thing about the Couture shows is that there are not very many designers that still have Haute Couture houses, which makes it easier to follow a la style.com.

I must admit, Elie Saab had the best collection and I wanted every piece from the runway. The intricate rouging to floor-length knee showing gowns were impeccable. Check out these other intricate designs that are made with lots of fabric, lots of handwork, and beautiful fabrics. All pictures from Style.com
